Those of you who have, by now, read and memorized the 2010 GSIs NORs for the Offshore Events should regard this as a refresher. For the rest of you this will be a teaser, with plot spoilers, but no substitute for actually reading them:

John and Linda Dodge of Richmond, Virginia are in the second month of their Project Sails to Save Haiti, a donation program designed to get as many used sails ( " the bigger the better but we will take anything" ) as well as spinnaker poles, lines, and anything else one might think of to construct shelter in an effort to help the over 600,000 Haitians who have been left out in the exposure due to the January 12th earthquake that killed over 230,000. UPDATE: As of 4/1/2010, the only racks/lockers still available for rent are A-12 (east side/tan lockers), B-5 and B-6.
There are 6 sail racks now available for rent - 5 in the newly closed off barn stall and the other is one of the original barn lockers. Each sail rack measures 13 L x 18 H x 18 D. Each rack can store several sets of one design sails rolled up, the rudder, tiller, etc., for a Flying Scot, Front Runner or Mobjack or the full rig of a Laser or Opti. The annual Fireball & Friends Regatta was held at the Davis Island Yacht Club, Tampa, Fl March 12-14. Classes in attendance included Fireball, Interlake, Front Runner, Windmill, and A Cat classes. The Front Runner class fielded a fleet of 10 boats to make the 14th annual trek to DIYC one of largest fleets at this much long standing mid-winter regatta. Fueled by the thought of sunny Florida skies, warm weather and cold beer the participants made arrangements, fixed trailers and boats to make the journey. Watching the wavering forecast with eager enthusiasm and overcoming several flat tires on the 12 hour trip, the group was welcomed by torrential rain, tornado watches and sustained winds of 25 knots. The second annual Safety-at-Sea Seminar will be held this Saturday, March 27, at the yacht club. Registration for late comers, bagels and coffee will be available at the main clubhouse beginning at 8:15 a.m. The seminar will begin at 9:00 a.m. We have a very interesting program with a discussion on electronics presented by Kevin Fay of Marine Electronics of Hartfield. He will talk about AIS-Automatic Identification System, MMSI-Mobile Maritime Service Identity, EPIRB, FCC licensing, SSB HF communications and PROCTOR e-mail, Broadband Radar, Cell Phone and WiFi amplifiers and Gyrocompass. As mentioned in a recent Commodore Tabbs Quarterdeck Column, FBYC is one of 26 "pre-eminent American yacht Club's" invited by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) to participate in the U.S. Qualifying Series for the next NYYC Invitational Cup. The Qualifying Series will be sailed in Newport, Rhode Island, September 8-13, 2010, and the actual Invitational Cup will be September 10-17, 2011. The Qualifying Series will feature fleet racing in Sonars and J/22s in historic Newport, R.I. on the same waters that the NYYC conducted the America's Cup from 1958-1983. Ian G. Lorimer died on February 27, 2010 while on a cruise around the southern point of South America. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Pat Lorimer; son, Jim Lorimer; daughters and sons-in-law, Beth Bahner and Mark Grunwald, Kathy and Ken Lemelin, and Robin and Bryan Proffitt; and six granddaughters. Ian was born in the Bronx, NY. Pat was also born in the Bronx but she was younger than Ian and did not know him when growing up even though both went to some of the same schools. SPRING CLEAN-UP DAY

Its that time again. Join us on the first day of Spring for our annual Spring Clean-up Day. We will gather upstairs in the main clubhouse for coffee and refreshments at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided after clean-up.

Southern Bay college teams are on the water! Old Dominion University (ODU), Christopher Newport University (CNU), Hampton University (HU), College of William and Mary (WM), University of Virginia (UVA), and Virginia Tech (VT) have collegiate sailors out there racing in March. Some of the events in local waters include the ODU Spring Open this coming weekend, the CNU IceFree Invitational (March 13-14), and the CNU 2-on-2 Invitational (March 20-12).
