The FBYC Spring Series fleets got in two 4+ nm races yesterday. In the PHRF A fleet (6 boats), Craig Wright’s Afterthought won the tie for 1st for the day (3-1), over Sam Mitchener’s Double Eagle (2-2). Double Eagle had stand-in skippers, Mayo Tabb and Mark Stephens, as Sam has suffered the recent, unexpected lost of his wife, Cary. Glenn Doncaster, Nanqu, took 3rd for the day (1-4). In PHRF B (4 boats), Bob Fleck, Mad Hatter, took two bullets (1-1) for 1st place and Brad Davis, Bad Dog won the tie breaker for 2nd (3-2), over Eric Powers, Nereid (2-3), 3rd. In PHRF C (4 boats), Bundy, Blue …
Sunday's Spring Series #1 proved to be an exciting day of racing, kicking off the series under sunny skies and varying breezes. After nearly an hour AP from the lack of winds, the Race Committee found breezes in the 5-8 knot range out of 060 degrees. A W4 course was established with 1.2 nm legs.
PHRF A started the day at 11:55 followed by rolling starts for PHRF B, C, and Non-Spin. In race 1, many boats went left expecting a right shift and lift to the weather mark. That did not pan out as the fleets split, with roughly half breaking away onto a port tack. To add to the challenge, many over stood with an …
Today is the IDES of APRIL – April 15th is federal income tax filing deadline day. YIKES!
Twenty (20) of the FBYC Off Shore Division boats raced on Saturday in a non-sanctioned mid-distance race at the FBYC Opening Day festivities. Craig Wright’s J109, Afterthought won the race, followed by Sam Mitchener’s Double Eagle, and Drake Johnstone’s Cat’s Pajamas in 3rd.
FBYC Spring Series opened yesterday with twenty-two (22) boats in two races. The first day of “serious” racing followed on the heels of Saturday’s FBYC Opening Day mid-distance race, designed to shake off rust, bless the fleet, and enjoy a great dinner and a live band. SPRING SERIES DAY 1 RESULTS: PHRF A (5 boats …
At the St. Petersburg NOOD, Brandon Flack, his wife and kids sailed their J70 "Torqueedo", until the last day, with temperatures at 42 degrees, honking wind and big waves. See this recount of his decision-making. Our "Loonatictu" was one of the intrepid dozen out of 20 who went out that day, after the delay of a skied main halyard, and other than the occassional knockdown, the big challenge was finding a dry course to the sailing area. The spray only felt hot for an instant, then Brrrrr.
This Saturday, April 13th, there will be an Offshore meeting in preparation for the 2013 FBYC Racing Series. This meeting will occur at 4 PM in Fannie's House after the Opening Day medium distance race and prior to the Blessing of the Fleet. The meeting will end promptly at 4:45 PM to allow time for folks to migrate to the Blessing. If for some reason the Opening Day race is not complete prior to 4 PM, an alternate time for this meeting will be established and posted on Fannie's door.
The goal for this meeting is to provide a forum for skippers and to share their thoughts on relevant topics related to club …

Nine days ago, the Columbia 32 Carbon, Uncontrollable Urge, lost its rudder in the vicinity of San Clemente Island while racing in the 4th Annual Islands Race. The crew attempted to set an anchor and attempted to launch a life raft, but ended up abandoning the vessel to swim to shore. One of the crew, Craig Thomas Williams (36) of San Diego, died in the incident. Another of the six-man crew, Ryan Georgianna, has strong southern Bay ties. He hails from Williamsburg and now resides in …

This past weekend, the Florida Flying Scot District Series continued with the George Washington Birthday Regatta, hosted by the Lake Eustis Sailing Club. Lake Eustis is located northwest of Orlando.
John Wake and I arrived at the club Friday afternoon. When we arrived there were 6+ boats out practicing and getting dialed in for the weekend. There was talk of a 30+ boat turnout, but given the expectation of a strong cold front passing through Saturday afternoon, the turnout maxed out at 29 boats.
After setting up 5566, which we had stored at the club since the last event in January, we headed to the Oyster Troff (yes that is how you spell it – only in Florida). This is an …
The skipper of THISTLEDOWNE, Bill McClure of Troy, Virginia, and his Charlottesville area team are all signed up for the Hospice Alliance Regatta scheduled in April in St. Petersburg, FL. Bill and his crew earned the right to compete by winning the Turkey Shoot Regatta held last Fall at Yankee Point Marina on Myer Creek, just off the Corrotomon, just off the Rappahannock River. But, for now Bill’s concerns are focused elsewhere. He is in St. Marteen preparing to race in the RORC Caribbean 600, which starts in a week on February 18th. No, Bill will not be sailing Thistledowne, a San Juan 21. Stay tuned – we hope to hear during the coming week …
