Commodore's Ball 2023 Event Recap

What a great time everyone had at the 2023 Commodore’s
Ball! We commenced the evening with our FBYC Annual
Meeting to provide a year in review of the successes
of 2023 and plans for 2024. Then, the very important
and honorable exchange of Flag Officer Patches and
presentation of our 2023 American and FBYC Flags
(which flew over our beloved campus during 2023) to
our outgoing Commodore Mark Wensell. The meeting
was extremely well attended by over 75---demonstrating
positive interests in FBYC Leadership and ongoing
management.

We took a different course this year by returning back to
the beautiful Country Club of Virginia. We tried something
new by switching to Action …

Some footage of the 2000 US Laser Masters has been re-digitized and is available for viewing on YouTube. This was one of the last major events in the old club house before it was torn down to make way for the new one.  Check out the footage to see some of what things looked like and some of the people who helped put on this 92-boat event or sailed in it.  The video is not short, so use the text in the description to jump around and find the parts you want to see.

2023 One Design Season Wraps up with Frostbite Regatta

Jon Deutsch on

One Design Racing

The One Design Division ended the season with the frostbite regatta that wasn’t much of a frostbite.  Sailors were treated to temps in the low 70s and winds that reached the double digits.

20231029-frostbite-scots.jpg

After waiting about an hour for the sea breeze – it came and gave the 10 ILCA, 3 Flying Scots and 2 Melges 15s 4 nice races.

The Flying Scot fleet saw each boat win a race with Ric and Sharon Bauer winning the tiebreaker race to the dock to win the day.

The ILCA Fleet saw Scott Adam, James Jacob, Mike Moore and Holly Sears mixing it up at the front of the fleet.  James Jacob would win the day, followed by Scott Adam, Peter Ill …

Wolf Trap Regatta Results

Aaron Sutten on

Club News

On Saturday, September 16th the 2023 running of the Wolf Trap regatta nearly could have started with a bang but in actuality, it was a well-played reaching start in a fresh northwesterly breeze leading to a solid spinnaker leg south to the old lighthouse. The keyword for the windward (etc.) return leg was perseverance; Hats off to the B fleet boats that sailed smartly in the backing, clocking, and vanishing winds to best a foul current and finish within the time limit. It’s always a pleasure to watch skippers and crews work their boats from an RC point of view.

42nd Chesapeake Bay ILCA Masters Results

Jon Deutsch on

ILCA Logo - Small

20230909-RPA-9123.jpg

Light rain and approaching thunderstorms limited the 32-boat fleet at the 42nd Chesapeake Bay ILCA Masters Championship at Fishing Bay Yacht Club to just two races on Saturday and no racing on Sunday. James Jacob from Severn Sailing Association won the overall title for his 7th time while Dorian Haldeman from Severn Sailing Association won the women’s title for her 5th time.

The weekend started with hot conditions on Friday as sailors were arriving and many elected to hit the pool to cool off, not something this group is used to needing or doing when the event is in October. Those who elected to go out for practice were treated to an awesome afternoon sea breeze from the SSE …

20230820-04.jpg

What started light, turned into a nice day of racing for 6 ILCA and 5 Melges 15s. After a brief postponement on the water the wind started to fill and 4 races were sailed in a breeze that built to 10-12 out of the ESE. The wind shifted, the course moved and 1 more race was sailed from the SE.  Bob & Lisa Fleck, Glenn & Becca Doncaster and Ruthana Jenkins were the race committee.

In the Melges 15 class Rob Whittemore and JT Mason won 4 out of 5 races to take the day. They were followed by Mike Miller with John Hubbard and Justinias Petkauskas.
