Cape Charles line honors and overall winner is claimed by Doug Anderson assisted by Brad Miller.  In what is becoming a very popular annual event, this year’s version had twelve yachts and some fifty people enjoying the sail down to Cape Charles in near perfect conditions.  The group was diverse; racers and cruisers, regular crew and families, racing boats and sturdy circumnavigators.  The festival on the dock lasted several hours and after much deliberation, a trophy was selected and awarded…albeit somewhat depleted.  The return Sunday to the club was uphill but, for an August day, simply fantastic.  Look for the 7th edition on the club schedule next year, you will not be disappointed in your participation.  It …

This event honors Jere Dennison who served in FBYC leadership roles for over 40 years. While his achievements with the Club are too numerous to mention, he was the Club's youngest Commodore, created the Club's comprehensive Austin Memorial Library, and was Club Historian for over 15 years. Jere was an avid one-design sailor who completely understood that sailing is a lifelong adventure - an ancient legacy to be passed on from generation to generation!

This is a free event (no entry fee), key points:

1--Skipper must be 60 (crew can be any age--so grab a family member, junior recommended)

2--Vintage skipper division (70 +)  (you could win two trophies)

Most FBYC members who only visit on the weekends or during special events don't think much about the Middlesex volunteer fire and rescue squads.  Until they need help.

To show how much we value these awesome folks, FBYC held its first Middlesex First Responders Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 17.  The club invited volunteers and their families to spend a few hours at the club, enjoying the pool, lunch and a ride on Mr. Roberts.  All those who came had a wonderful time and appreciated us as much as we value them.

Thanks to Brian Ankrom for captaining Mr. Roberts, Dave Hinckle for a great banner and Margaret and Steve Montgomery for making everyone feel welcome during lunch.  Next time …

Nothing beats experience on the tiller!  Our Legacy Regatta on SATURDAY, AUGUST 24 honors both FBYC sailor Jere Dennison....and any skipper over 60 years old.  There's still time to sign-up online and show those juniors you've got what it takes to win.

This one-day event is for Flying Scots, Classic boats, and one-designs with three or more entries. You can have "youngsters" as crew but not on the helm.  Don't have a boat?  Enroll in the club-owned boat program and sail one of our three Scots.  (But do it now before they are all checked out.)

3-2-1 Invitational Regatta

Paul Wash on

Team Racing

Dear FBYC Member,

I wanted to share with everyone that Fishing Bay Yacht Club has accepted an invitation to participate in Annapolis Yachts Club's inaugural 3-2-1 regatta. This event is designed specifically for team racing and has participants coming from outside the Chesapeake Bay. FBYC is delighted to receive an invitation to this fall event and looks forward to again demonstrating our capabilities in the northern bay.

At the beginning of the year we discussed strategies for creating and participating in innovative programs that continuously engage our sailors, bring new opportunities for existing membership and attract new members. Participating in this event aligns with this strategy. It is an introduction to a new racing format for our membership and plus …

FBYC hosted a fantastic group of ladies (both club members and non) for the annual Women's Clinic. This year eleven women took to the water in three club Flying Scots, a club 420 and a Laser and enjoyed two full days of on-the-water practice with a scattering of chalk talks. Everyone got what they came for which was tons of tiller time and a better understanding of strategy, tactics, and racing rules. Several participants will be out sailing at FBYC in the immediate future including at AOD and the Fall One Design Series. Special thanks to FBYC's Luke Hayes for coaching the beginner group and Premier Sailing's Arabella Denvir for coaching the racers. Also thanks to the One Design Fleet …

Wind, fog and dead calm infused with heat indexes over 100 degrees did not stop our FBYC Junior Laser sailors from racing fast in the Laser North American Championships in Brant Beach, NJ July 18-21.  With more than 120 contenders, including adults, this was the largest regatta for many of our Juniors.  Our eight racers, along with their coach, braved the conditions and represented FBYC well. Pictured are Logan Hayes, Guthrie Braun, Joshua Almany, Morey Levy, Jack Cabell, Luke Hayes (CNU), Finn Ciszewski, Coach Alex Zimmermann, Jordan Bendura, Joshua Bendura.  Special shout-outs to Guthrie Braun who placed 6th in Laser Radials and Jordan Bendura who placed 18th.
