US SAILING ONE DAY RACE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR

Saturday, January 20, 2018 – hosted by Hampton Yacht Club

Deadline for Registration – January 15, 2018

This seminar gives an in-depth look at race management and why race committees do what they do., i.e. sailing instructions, people and equipment, setting good courses with proper lines and legs, good starting sequences (and recalls), changing and shortening courses, and finishing the race.  There is something here for everyone wanting to be a more knowledgeable member of the race committee, not just the PROs.

Also, the seminar meets the course requirements for folks wanting to certify (or re-certify) as a Club Race Officer.

All materials, deli-bar lunch, plus coffee, pastries, etc. throughout the day are included …

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Holiday season so far and are looking forward to the new year!

The Club boats and docks are being winterized.  Please be advised, water is not available on the Jackson Creek docks, the Fishing Bay pier, exterior faucets, or the hydrants.  The Bathhouse has also been closed for the winter.

Please continue to be careful and avoid the East Dock construction site as well as the construction staging area in the Dry Sail lot.  Boats in the Dry sail lot will be moved to other areas of the facility to make room.  New dock materials will begin arriving in January.

This week’s update:

• We are winterizing the facility and water will not be available on the Jackson Creek docks, the Fishing Bay pier, exterior faucets, or the hydrants.
• Please be careful and avoid the East Dock construction site as well as the construction staging area in the Dry Sail lot.
• I will be on site three days per week (usually Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) during the offseason.  I can also be here by appointment.  I will be monitoring my email & voicemail periodically when I’m not on site.  Feel free to contact me if you need any assistance, notice a maintenance need, or have any questions.

The official Club calendar for 2017 has come to a close but stay posted to the FBYC News page for community events this Winter! 

The Deltaville Community Association’s annual Jackson Creek Cruise will be held THIS FRIDAY (rain date Saturday, December 9)!  The deadrises Bethpager and the Rob-Ann-Jay are scheduled for 4:30, 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 pm. 

Please be advised, tickets for the cruises are currently SOLD OUT but cancellations may make additional tickets available at the door.

In addition, the Rappahannock River Railroad Club will again set up a display of model trains this year in …

Weekend Update

Everyone will need to choose between two events being held on the final weekend of 2017! 

The final Offshore Winter Series race will be held at the Club.  Race Contact  -  Mike Karn; Social Contact  -  Sharon Bauer.

The Young Adult Members are gathering in Richmond on Saturday.  Everyone is invited to meet at 10am at Lombardy and Broad streets to watch the annual holiday parade.  Continued festivities will be held from 12pm to 3pm at the Durham's.  Social Contacts - Julia & Blake Kimbrough.

The Sailing Events Committee has completed planning the sailing schedule for 2018 and all events are now posted on the website at https://www.fbyc.net/events/?year=2018.  Some of the events are:

• Opening Day and Blessing of the fleet - April 21

• July 4 Long Distance Race and Cookout  - June 30
• Opti Kids is scheduled for June 9-10 and June 16-17.

Weekend Update

As the season winds down, the second Offshore Winter Series race will be held this weekend.  Race Contact  -  John Wake; Social Contact  -  George Burke.

Please come out on Sunday and help other Club members clean the campus during the Fall Clean-Up Day.  A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.  Event Contact - Helen Walker.

Delegates from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand visited FBYC on November 4^th.  Our guests included Admiral Kraisorn Chansuvanich, Admiral Thanee Phudpad, Rear Admiral Narongdej Spanuchart, and Commander Sathit Sirisang.  They met with a few of our past Commodores as well as Commodore David Lennarz, Vice-Commodore Rob Whittemore, Junior Division Commander Doug Bendura, and incoming Rear Commodore Tracy Schwarzschild.  The topics of discussion included club operations, the upcoming King’s Cup in December, and our Juniors’ programs

To add to the excitement of our Closing Day, we will have a delegation from the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand visiting the Club this Saturday, November 4th.  It will include their President, who is a former Admiral in the Thai Navy.  They contacted us through an Attaché at the Embassy of Thailand and are coming on a good will mission.  They have heard much about the success of FBYC, and would like to see for themselves how our Club operates.

They will meet with Division leaders, as well as former Commodores.  Please extend a welcome to them.

The weather forecast is for a beautiful day!  Don’t miss one of the Club’s favorite events!  EVERYONE is invited to mingle with our hearty sailors after the races.  Oyster lovers can enjoy them on-the-halfshell, roasted, Rockefeller and Casino.  We’ll also offer delicious grilled hotdogs and buffet tables loaded with all the tasty dishes brought by our partygoers.

On October 6^th, Meg Rock resigned as Executive Secretary.  Meg interacted with many of you during her four year tenure.  She was organized, professional, and always a joy to work with.   She kept the Board on track and organized, and she dedicated herself to FBYC right up to her last weeks.

On October 14^th she succumbed to cancer following nearly a decade long battle.  The large contingent of FBYC members who attended her funeral on October 20^th was a testament and tribute to Meg’s contributions and an indication of just how much we will miss her.    

Shortly after announcing her resignation, Meg helped us to hire her replacement.  The hiring committee selected Donna Mason to serve …

We have posted a memorium to Meg Rock plus a tribute to Meg written by her sons at Meg Rock, Executive Secretary 2013-2017.  A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 20, at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Dr., North Chesterfield, Va. 23235.

It was great weekend all around at the 36th Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship where 44 sailors had 7 races over two days in a variety of conditions and Rob Hallawell from Milford Connecticut won the championship. Sailors from as far away as Toronto and Miami began arriving at Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville Virginia mid afternoon Friday as the weather began to turn and cloud up with some misty rain.  That didn’t deter some hearty sailors from going for a practice sail.

High tides on Friday night and Saturday made driving down Fishing Bay Road more of an aquatic adventure and cars queued up at the hose stations for wash downs much like sailboats do after racing …
