The Dry Sail Hoist will be taken out of use from Wednesday the 9th of December to do needed maintenance work. Because of the nature of this work it maybe out of use till February as the parts that are to be replaced need to be fabricated.

Last Thursday I presented the FBYC board with a plan to make some behind-the-scenes changes to the FBYC website in late November and December. Now that the sailing season is over, we have the opportunity to cure a simple database design issue.
Everybody who uses the website has a user account, which knows your contact information. The member database also keeps your contact information, in a separate table. Our goal is to "normalize" the database, meaning both sets of data will be kept in one place. A small web site committee approved the plan last night. The Pump Out Stations will be closed down at the club on Monday the 16th and the water shut off all Docks on Monday the 24th November.

The Fall Opti Race Team has won the inaugural South Carolina Yacht Club Invitational Optimist Team Race Regatta! The regatta was sailed last weekend, November 7th-8th, in Calibogue Sound, near the entrance to Windmill Harbour, at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Our team was made up of Benton Amthor, Nathan Smith, Guthrie Braun and Reed McAllister; and was coached by our Spring/Fall Opti Coach, Bob Lippincott.
FBYC received the invitation to sail in the regatta last spring, along with Opti teams from the Chicago Yacht Club, the Edgewater Yacht Club, the Florida Yacht Club and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club of Ontario. 2015 has been a banner year for FBYC’s junior race teams! We had 3 race team members sail in international events in 2015; and 3 of our sailors have already committed to represent the United States in Optis in 2016! The United States Optimist Dinghy Association holds two qualifying regattas yearly to set the teams which will represent the United States in upcoming international competitions. It is the ultimate for an Opti sailor to be invited to be a member of “Team USA”! We sent our FBYC Opti Race Team to the qualifying regattas, along with our coaches, when these sailors qualified. In addition, in 2015, we had a race team member helm a J70 in 2 international events!

It needs to be stated, this is a “you know it when you see it” intangible. The compelling rationale for the nomination should be self-evident. FBYC’s own Benton Amthor has WON the 2015 United States Optimist Dinghy Association Atlantic Coast Championship! The regatta was sailed last weekend, October 24th & 25th, at Annapolis Yacht Club. 201 boats competed in the Championship Fleet, not including the Green Fleet. The regatta was billed as the largest regatta ever hosted in Annapolis. After a highly competitive and hard fought battle through the last race, Benton edged out the current United States National Champion for first place. Benton won 1st Overall and 1st in the Red Fleet. Last year FBYC hosted the Flying Scot Atlantic Coast Champs, this year at the Blackbeard Sailing Club in New Bern NC hilarity ensued on the first (&only)race. Other than bruised egos, the boats from FBYC all survived.

The 34th Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Regatta was one cool regatta and Mike Hecky (Riverton Yacht Club) was coolest of them all winning the first race and hanging on to win the championship. Cool temperatures, fluky winds and a power outage were not enough to dampen the spirits of the 45 sailors all over the age of 35 competing for the Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship at Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Deltaville, Virginia.
On the first day a long course was set just south of Fishing Bay in the Piankatank River. Throughout the race the wind eased off from 8-11 at the start and Hecky was first to finish in just under an hour. Following that race the wind …

The United States Optimist Dinghy Association Spring Team Qualifier was sailed this past weekend, October 10th-12th, in Newport, Rhode Island. There were 245 of the best Opti sailors from across the United States racing; all hoping to earn a spot on one of the USODA spring teams.
Our kids sailed fantastic; although we did have one scare. We had four members make the trip: Benton Amthor, who finished 22nd; Boyd Bragg, who finished 23rd; Nathan Smith, who finished 71st; and Guthrie Braun. On Saturday we moved our web site to a new hosting provider https://www.digitalocean.com/. Because of a quirk in our technology, our old provider shut the site down for 5-10 minutes from time to time. Digital Ocean offers a more flexible service that should allow our site to operate flawlessly. Let's hope so!
Paul Wash made the needed changes to the IOS App, so it is up and running on the relocated database.
