The Trophy Committee will receive nominations until October 28th for the following perpetual trophies to be awarded for this year’s Annual Awards.
PIANKATANK TROPHY – Recognizes the FBYC skipper who most exemplifies the principle that “all is not lost until the boat sinks.”
MATTHEW FONTAINE MAURY BOWL – Recognizes a member of FBYC for an outstanding contribution to sailing at Fishing Bay Yacht Club.
COMPETITION TROPHY – Recognizes a member of FBYC who is the skipper of an enrolled offshore or one design boat and who most successfully represented FBYC in sailboat racing events conducted by other yacht clubs or associations during the past year. Nominations should consider the character (local, regional, national) of events entered and the quality of competition as …
Do you know a member who has consistently contributed over many years of membership to the success of FBYC and the sport of sailing? A member who actively works to set the strategy and direction for the club and is always there to help fellow sailors. A member who has been instrumental in helping FBYC become the club it is today. If so, consider nominating them for Life Member.
The purpose of awarding Life Member status is to recognize a member whose contributions are distinguished by their depth, breadth, superior quality and lasting impact. It needs to be stated, this is a “you know it when you see it” intangible. The compelling rationale for the nomination should be self-evident.

The Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters prove that things do get better with age – both the sailors and the regatta itself which celebrated its 40th annual this weekend. Special guests Happy Hubard and Jim Rodgers were both toasted at dinner along with current competitor and Chef Alain Vincey who all sailed in the very first FBYC Masters regatta in 1981. Alain shared the story of how the regatta was founded – in typical fashion sailors sharing a beer after racing labor day weekend decided to bring their boats and race with only the masters the following weekend and such the event was born. 40 years later the tradition continues and hundreds of sailors have taken part over the years.
47 Lasers will take to the waters of Fishing Bay this weekend in what will be the 40th annual Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters. We’re also very excited to honor a few sailors who participated in the inaugural regatta as specials guests at dinner thanks to Alain Vincey, Laser sailor and chef extraordinaire who started the event back in 1981 and has brought this group back together.
It takes a lot to run these regattas and a huge thank you to everyone who has helped over the past 4 decades. This event is special not just for the Laser fleet members at FBYC, but also the guests who come from up and down the east coast, year after year …
Sunday started breezy and sunny for the 8-boat fleet at FBYC’s ILCA Fall Regatta being sailed alongside a 4-boat Flying Scot Fleet. The ½ mile course was set on the south end of Area A just north of the channel with the wind out of the North. David Waiting (SSA) won the first 3 of 5 races to win the day overall. James Jacob (SSA) was two points behind with Jon Deutsch (FBYC) in 3rd another two points behind him.
In the early races the wind was up in the mid-teens, 2 boats retired early and the rest of the boats did well to sail left and pick up the shifts and pressure coming from up the Piankatank …
After a two-year hiatus, the Chesapeake's "Fall Rite of Passage" is back on and you're invited!
We've all struggled how to live, sail and stay healthy during this time of Covid. And there's no better way to keep our "heads-out-of-the-boat" than to visit the Annapolis Boat show next month. Numerous members have expressed interest in driving up together on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15 for a one-day, up and back excursion.
We'll be leaving from the Barnes and Noble Bookstore, 9850 Brook Rd, Glen Allen, VA at 7 AM SHARP and returning to Richmond, planning to arrive back around 10 PM.
Anyone wishing to either join the car caravan or car pool can meet up with others in the store's parking lot …
As previously announced, we are hosting a Melges 15 demo day at FBYC on September 11. East Coast Sailboats will have their demo boat at the club for the day. We will start with a rigging demonstration at 10:00 and plan on sailing starting at 11:00. Demo sails will be slotted for 30 min. each which should allow for both people to sail in the skipper and crew positions. Don’t worry if you don’t have another person, we can match individuals up if needed. Signups will be done via-SignUpGenius. Please see the link below.
Sunday, September 5 after the Stingray Point Regatta (Exact time dependent on the sailing, but likely to begin around 2pm)

It's hard to believe it's been 40 years since this event started and is now one of the longest continuously running events at the club.
This year we're extending the scoring to include a Legends division. Instead of having Great Grand Masters covering 65+, GGM will be 65-74 and Legends will cover 75+. This is in line with other masters regattas and will better recognize that age group.
Alain is planning another great dinner and we've got a highly experienced RC group led by Rick Klain back for another year. We'll have a commemorative t-shirt and have …
Are you interested in serving in a volunteer or leadership position at the Club? This is the time of year during which we plan for next year’s Board and Committee leadership positions. Offshore, Cruising, One Design, Junior Programs, Adult Programs, Facilities and Equipment, Special Events and Social Activities are all areas in which volunteers serve our Club. Many of our Board and Committee volunteers remain for ongoing service, but we typically have individuals who may wish retire from Board or Committee service or simply take some time off. We also have opportunities to consider members who have the commitment and time to share their talents in a hands-on leadership role. If you, or someone you know, would be an …
New and returning participants, club members, non-club members, racers and beginners were on hand for this weekend’s Women’s Clinic. For some it was an introduction to sailing while others in the advanced course practiced starting line techniques. Saturday started with some classroom instruction and moved to the Flying Scots on the water to practice various sailing techniques.
On Sunday, Coaches Holly Sears and Charlie Arms kept the classes engaged with drills in the boat on land and various discussion topics when the weather kept the classes off the water.
Thanks to our coaches Holly, Charlie and the support team of Caroline Patrick, Ron Jenkins, Joe Roos, Tracy Schwarzschild, Jon Deutsch, Rick Peterson and (of course!) Brian Ankrom.
Since 2015 FBYC has hosted a southern leg start to the St. Mary's Governor's Cup. With starts in Annapolis, Solomons and Fishing Bay - all of the fleets start Friday afternoon and evening and race overnight meeting at St. Marys. There's a great party Saturday night and most crews return home Sunday.
We had a gorgeous night for the start out at FBYC's G (Rappahannock 1R). The wind was light and the current was strong making the start a challenge not to be over early. That same current carried the fleet swiftly north after the start. The second highlight for the RC were the 50+ dolphins in all directions as they were weighing anchor.

The ILCA Summer Regatta I on Saturday saw beautiful weather – mostly sunny with winds starting around 12 and building to about 15-16 knots out of the south west. We had 14 boats with 9 ILCA 7 (Standard) and 4 ILCA 6 (Radial) all starting on the same line making things more fun with more boats to race with around the course. Some of the Radial sailors were really fast and were nearby and beating many of the standards around the course. It kept things interesting at mark roundings.
FBYC’s junior coach for the summer, Francisco Renna, put on a clinic in the ILCA 7 (standard) fleet. He was fast all the way around the course and nobody came close …
