Not only was there no race-able wind, there was no wind at all. That made it a slow start for the inaugural Cape Dory Typhoon National Regatta last weekend on the Rappahannock River near Carters Creek.
Photo:Some 32 Typhoons participated in the inaugural Cape Dory Typhoon National Regatta hosted by the Rappahannock River Yacht Club last weekend.
The event sponsored by the Rappahannock River Yacht Club featured 32 typhoons, 19 in the Championship Fleet and 13 in the Corinthian Fleet. The regatta was constructed as a one-design, non-spinnaker race for Weekender, Daysailer and Open Typhoons …
Congratulations to Len and Barb, representing Fleet 103, for their superb 1st Place Trophy at the 2011 Summer Solstice Regatta, held at Selby Bay in Maryland. In very trying conditions, they bested a field of heavy hitters, including Allan Terhune (2010 NAC Champion), David Neff, and John Aras/John Wake.

The Laser Spring Regatta saw 8 Standard Lasers and 3 Radials out for racing on a beautiful day on the Piankatank. The wind was a little light, but PRO Matt Lambert kept the course as square as they could and ran 6 races.
With a few short courses and a few longer courses the fleet got in some good competitive races and everyone had a good time.
The format for Laser racing at FBYC has changed this year. Rather than participate on the same days as other one design fleets at FBYC, we have scaled back the Laser events to just 3 on days where no other classes are sailing. 2 more Laser race days remain: Sunday, September 18 and …

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve a $97,575 bid from Docks of the Bay construction company to dredge a portion of the mouth of Jackson Creek in Deltaville.
The project will be 75% funded through a Port Authority grant. The board agreed to fund $13,125.

Tim Zimmerman is a writer for Sailing World and was a competitor at the 2011 Laser District 11 Championship we hosted a few weeks ago at Fishing Bay Yacht Club and he's written a nice blog article about his experience at the regatta:
Dont get me wrong. The regatta itself, the District 11 Laser Championships, was not terrible. In fact, it was fantastic. Hosted by the smoothly-run, beautifully-situated, Fishing Bay Yacht Club down in Deltaville, Va., on the southern Chesapeake Bay, the regatta was blessed with excellent winds, a great crowd of sailors, and a Laser-loving chef, Alain Vincey, who cooked up a spectacular Saturday-evening dinner. Even the camping was nice.
AFTERTHOUGHT, J109, from Raleigh, North
Carolina, owed and skippered by Craig Wright, won THE BLACK SEAL CUP, for best
overall performance at SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK 2011. In the
largest of the handicap and one-design fleets, PHRF A2 (12 boats),
Afterthought had only one blemish, a 2nd which was a throw-out,
in her string of finishes for SBRW (1-[2]-1-1-1-1). The regatta, which
is sailed in Hampton Roads, drew 98 keel boats from the mid-Atlantic and as
far away as Maine. Tom Hall, from Scarborough, Maine,
brought his Elliott 770 to Hampton and dominated the SBRW PHRF B1
fleet. On Friday, the first day of racing, the fleet raced in the
Harbor, after a …

The second and final version of the Clubhouse Donor Plaque now hangs in the first floor of the clubhouse. This plaque recognizes those who contributed to the 2000-2002 campaign to build the new clubhouse. Those of you who are listed on the plaque deserve FBYC's congratulations and thanks, as do all who did double duty to create an error free exhibit. Special thanks go to Jere Dennison for his diligence and cheerful spirit in the face of having to retrace his efforts, and to Chip Hall who, in volunteering his time and skills, twice built a mahogany mount, once for the "false plaque", and then again for the spendid final product.

Twenty-three boats turned out for the final round of the 2011 Offshore Spring Series on Sunday. Three, 3.0 mile races were completed in beautiful weather, in contrast to the unfortunate conditions of opening weekend.
It was a day of consistency in each fleet with virtually no change in the top three spots in each class for all races. Three familiar guest boats swept the day in preparation for their trek down to Southern Bay Race Week.
PHRF A was led by Craig Wright's Afterthought (Neuse Yacht Racing Assoc.), fresh off a third place finish in the ten boat, J109 class at Annapolis NOOD. They were followed by overall Spring Series winner, Double Eagle (Sam Mitchener), and Chilcoot (Alex …
