Southern Bay clubs' racing and event officials have been at
work since October on the 2009 CBYRA Region 4, "big boat" racing schedule.
The official Southern Bay Racing Schedule (CBYRA Region
4,Handicap Fleets (Big Boats) will be ready for
official publication in early January. Watch for announcement in
SBRNYCU. Now, efforts are being directed at
Junior and One-Design schedules - point of contact is Tom

These weeks immediately before and during the holidays are
busy for everyone. Here's how Captain Joshua Slocum
reported that he spent his in December 1895. He had departed Boston,
on April 24, 1895, beginning his epic voyage.
PHRF Class Splits of Region 4 (Southern Chesapeake
Bay) for 2009 - announced as follows:
REGION 4 - SOUTH DIVISION: A - Up to
109; B - 110 to 163; C - 164 and Up;
Non-Spin - all
REGION 4 - NORTH DIVISION: A - Up to
112; B - 113 to 166; C - 167 and Up;

There is NO Change from the 2008 class splits.
PHRF elected new officers for 2009 in
November and those with southern Bay responsibilities are:
Mike Dale, VP for Region 4 and Christian Schaumloffel,
Chief handicapper for Region 4. The new president of PHRF of the
Chesapeake is Bruce Bingman and the Secretary-Treasurer is Bob Thomas.

southern Chesapeake Bay. The US SAILING Basic Race Management
Seminar will be hosted by Hampton Yacht Club in two, half-day sessions, February

FBYC FALL CLEAN-UP DAY
On Saturday, November 15, at 9:00 a.m., well need as many volunteers as possible to spruce up FBYCs grounds. Well be raking leaves, spreading mulch, and various other tasks so please bring your rakes and shovels. Coffee will be provided to get you started and well end the mornings work with pizza and beer.

Last Saturday October 25, fourteen Offshore and Cruising boats had a wonderful pursuit race in 25-30 knot Southeast wind conditions. At the skippers meeting we decided it would be best to race inside Fishing Bay again, hoping to find some lee shores to protect the fleet. Because Mr. Roberts was already docked on the Fishing Bay side of FBYC, we decided to motor up the Piankitank River and set an orange mark in the middle of the Piankitank River just South of Bland Point. New Rule Books are coming
soon! This past week the new Racing
Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012 was unveiled at the US
SAILING Annual General Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. There are a
number of significant changes, all of which will be covered in detail at
the MURPHY RULES clinic, set for January 24, 2009, at Norfolk Yacht and
Country Club (see information below). US SAILING members should look
for their copies of the new rule …
I am now entering my fourth year as Race Chair for the Staggered Start Race. The first two years I had laid out many alternative courses, but then lost the notebook with the courses, and in 2007 we had a slightly revised system, which will be used again this year.
At the Skippers meeting to occur at the Flagpole at 9:30am on Saturday Ocober 25, 2008, I will hand out printed copies of
this Spreadsheet. Please note it has 2 pages - one sheet is to be used if we start on time, the other if the start is to be delayed. The spreadsheet forces me to set courses with a length on exactly X miles - i.e. no fractions …
Both old and new tie designs are now available in the FBYC Store. These ties will be available at the Awards Banquet at the Virginia Museum on November 7 at the Virginia Museum. They feature the club colors of red or blue in a "rep" stripe design with one embroidered burgee between the stripes at the wide part of the tie, as pictured here. Also available is the traditional FBYC tie with multiple burgees on a navy blue background. The latter design is also now available in a limited number of bow ties. The price is $35 per tie, both long and bow ties.
In these uncertain times, it is nice to see a validation of our own self-interested justifications for what we spend on our boats and our membership in Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Happily, I think we can rest assured that, as the Club goes forward, its Leadership will weigh carefully each and every expenditure at Fishing Bay, but will also keep an eye on the things that really matter to us all. Baltimore II is first to finish at Thimble Shoal.
Virginia's nemesis, The Pride, rolled down the Bay from
Annapolis, Thursday afternoon and through the night to finish this
year's Great Schooner Race at Thimble Shoal at 6:16:03 AM on Friday. Skipper Jan
Miles won line honors as well as the AA Fleet on corrected time. Our
Virginia (skipper Hank Mosely) finished 2nd in the water at
8:30:36AM, but 4 in her fleet corrected on her with handicap times, pushing
her to 6th once all the paperwork was done.

2008 HOSPICE TURKEY SHOOT REGATTA IS IN THE
BOOKS! One hundred and thirty (130) boats raced
in the event which opened on Friday night with the usual welcome
party at Yankee Point Marina. Twelve fleets (two Divisions) competed
on Saturday on drop mark courses, and, on Sunday, did an
up-the-river-and-back pursuit race. That many boats racing
up the Rappahannock River from the mouth of the Corrotoman to Urbanna and back
on a perfect day (10-15 knots) was a perfect ending to a great …
MORNING LIGHT is coming. As a
preliminary piece, ESPN2 HD will air on October 8, Wednesday, at 8
PM, a 60 minute program on the tryouts and selection team leading
up to the movie which premieres later this month.

Dale Moser, a mainstay around southern Bay racing and
especially on the Rappahannock River scene, passed last Tuesday, after
battling an illness. He is gone way too
soon. Those who knew Dale will miss him terribly; those
who had not known him, have missed a truly gentle man. "And in the night
of death, hope sees a star, and listening love hears the rustle of a
wing."
