DOWN THE BAY RACE BUZZZZZZZZZZZ: Early
information on the re-instituted DOWN THE BAY RACE FOR THE VIRGINIA CRUISING
CUP (May 22 start date) is buzzing around. This will be the
60th rendition of this old, old event where racers will
compete non-stop from just below the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to Hampton
Roads. The course will cover the 120 mile distance from
Annapolis to Hampton on the Chesapeake Bay. Classes include IRC, PHRF
A,B,C, Non-Spinnaker (double headsail), and any one-design classes with 5 or
more boats entered. The first warning signal will be at 1030, Friday, May

Southern Bay clubs' racing and event officials have been at
work since October on the 2009 CBYRA Region 4, "big boat" racing schedule.
The official Southern Bay Racing Schedule (CBYRA Region
4,Handicap Fleets (Big Boats) will be ready for
official publication in early January. Watch for announcement in
SBRNYCU. Now, efforts are being directed at
Junior and One-Design schedules - point of contact is Tom

These weeks immediately before and during the holidays are
busy for everyone. Here's how Captain Joshua Slocum
reported that he spent his in December 1895. He had departed Boston,
on April 24, 1895, beginning his epic voyage.
PHRF Class Splits of Region 4 (Southern Chesapeake
Bay) for 2009 - announced as follows:

November and those with southern Bay responsibilities are:

Chief handicapper for Region 4. The new president of PHRF of the
Chesapeake is Bruce Bingman and the Secretary-Treasurer is Bob Thomas.

an interactive discussion of the racing rules with special emphasis on the

southern Chesapeake Bay. The US SAILING Basic Race Management
Seminar will be hosted by Hampton Yacht Club in two, half-day sessions, February

On Saturday, November 15, at 9:00 a.m., well need as many volunteers as possible to spruce up FBYCs grounds. Well be raking leaves, spreading mulch, and various other tasks so please bring your rakes and shovels. Coffee will be provided to get you started and well end the mornings work with pizza and beer.

Last Saturday October 25, fourteen Offshore and Cruising boats had a wonderful pursuit race in 25-30 knot Southeast wind conditions. At the skippers meeting we decided it would be best to race inside Fishing Bay again, hoping to find some lee shores to protect the fleet. Because Mr. Roberts was already docked on the Fishing Bay side of FBYC, we decided to motor up the Piankitank River and set an orange mark in the middle of the Piankitank River just South of Bland Point. New Rule Books are coming
soon! This past week the new Racing
Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012 was unveiled at the US
SAILING Annual General Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. There are a
number of significant changes, all of which will be covered in detail at
the MURPHY RULES clinic, set for January 24, 2009, at Norfolk Yacht and
Country Club (see information below). US SAILING members should look

I am now entering my fourth year as Race Chair for the Staggered Start Race. The first two years I had laid out many alternative courses, but then lost the notebook with the courses, and in 2007 we had a slightly revised system, which will be used again this year.
At the Skippers meeting to occur at the Flagpole at 9:30am on Saturday Ocober 25, 2008, I will hand out printed copies of
this Spreadsheet. Please note it has 2 pages - one sheet is to be used if we start on time, the other if the start is to be delayed. The spreadsheet forces me to set courses with a length on exactly X miles - i.e. no fractions …
