Make sure you get your points in the Long Distance Series in this weekend's Smith Point Race. This is the fourth race in the five race series that will end with the Wolf Trap race in September. Start time is at 1400 on Saturday with the time limit set for the same time Sunday. This is a great chance to trade the daytime heat for the cool light of a full Chesapeake moon. A Brunch will be served at the main clubhouse afterwards at 1100.

A long time club member once told me that most Middlesex County residents believe Christchurch School is the center of the sailing universe. Not any more, times are changing. Fishing Bay YC got not one but two mentions in the 11 August issue of the Southside Sentinel.
The first, about the club's program to introduce county youth to the joys of sailing, the second to announce the 66th Annual One Design Regatta that finished yesterday. Readers will be able to find more information on subsequent web postings and later in the Log. For those not addicted or afflicted with latter day communication tools the Log or the Southside Sentinel will have to suffice.
We have turned off the on-line registration for the 66th Annual Regatta this weekend because the people managing the event need to print out the registration information as they are headed to the River this morning to get things ready. The Registration desk opens at 8AM on Saturday morning and Deborah Usry will be there ready to hand registered participants their packets and to receive entries from those who are, well, late.
Last night at the monthly FBYC Trustees meeting, the Social Committee Chair reported that the preparations for the LUAU are proceeding well. The party will be slightly different from the usual FBYC dinner, and it sounds very exciting. Put on your best Hawaiian Outfits and get ready!
After enjoying several consecutive years of 15-20 knot breezes for the annual Cruise Regatta, this year's fleet stared the 13.8 nautical mile course in the face thru an absolute calm; initially, the staggered start resulted in more staggering than starting, and with boats drifting together, fenders became more important than sails or skills. Winds remained light thru most of the afternoon, causing cancellation of the race prior to its completion, and allowing the cruisers to get an early start on evening cocktails and appetizers. The cruising Division thanks Brooks Zerkel and Mike Dale, race chairmen, for their excellent management of this race. MR ROBERTS' presence at the starting line was a welcomed milestone for this event, giving the …
August 9th The Long Pond Open on Cape Cod was sailed in a fleet of matched one-design laser dinghies. The competitors represented three nations and two continents with ages ranging from very young to very old.
FBYC was well represented in all categories by laser cult leader, Alain "Buddy Boy" Vincey and his long time Cato, Will Crump, Danish match racer Marie "Sail your own dinghy" Crump and the past College of Charleston Sailing Team Captain, Blake "collar up" Kimbrough.
Outsider Thomas Klok found it difficult to compete with allegations of FBYC team racing and said "my experience has been to never compete with a team lead by the french - this event just proves me right!"

The team of Jan Monnier and Nica Waters returned to race course yesterday for a successful defense of their title in the Second Annual Womens's 420 Regatta.
With much needed assistance and instruction from Alex O'Toole the competitors worked together to get three boats rigged and ready to go. Three teams: Jan and Nica, Kelly and Alex O'Toole, and June Hazlehurst and me - left the beach in a nice 7-10 knot breeze for this exiting event.
Race committee PRO Ric Bauer was ably assisted by flag man Jim Gillespie. In accordance with our instructions, the first windward/leeward race started promptly at noonish. The signals went off without a hitch in spite of distractions associated with bailing …

I won't reprint the entire article here -- you'll have to ask a Flying Scot Sailing Association member for a copy -- but here are some of the highlights...

Juan took a few pretty good pictures of our FBYC Racing team at Fishing Bay before they departed for the Opti Nationals at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.
This weekend's Point to Point Race was nearly washed out by stormy skies and light winds on Saturday but many racers persevered to return for a 19.5 mile pursuit race on Sunday. The race's original iternerary which included a dinner and social at Reedville was abandoned due to the weather but most skippers and crews had a great time nonetheless at an impromptu social and dinner Saturday evening at the clubhouse. Star gastronomic delights included steamed crabs, roast turkey and a plethora of pastas. Sunday's race was held in a 10-15 knot northeaster in somewhat lumpy seas off Stingray Point. A surprise leg into Fishing Bay near the finish rounded out the test for each crew …
Madeleine Alderman had a first place finish in the third race of the Optimist Nationals at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. The first few days of the regatta were plaqued by cancelled races and very light winds. The regatta ends Friday, July 29. The 7th annual Leukemia Cup Regatta raised over $200,000, far surpasing the amt. we raised last year. It was a unbelievable Regatta series starting with a visit from Gary Jobson in March, followed by the JR. Challenge, the Kayak tour, Arts at FBYC and the Sail-a-thon, ending in a weekend, with FBYC hosting three major events at the same time. The J.O.'s, the Regatta and a visit from the Schooner Virginia one of her earliest.
Friday night's auction was so well attended that we will have to look at how to expand the Firehouse. We sold 300 crab cakes thanks to the efforts of York River Yacht Club.
The second race of the series is this Saturday. According to Accuweather, the forecast looks great - winds NNE 12-14, high 84F. Laser sailing nirvana.
Same time - 1pm registration, 2 pm skipper's meeting and first warning at 3 pm. There are three club boats available and the junior coaches will be there to open the shed. Send me an email if you want to reserve one of these, copy to jon@jdeutsch.com and davidhazlehurst@comcast.net. I won't be there, due to swim meet commitments, but I look forward to being regaled with "you should've been there" stories about the best sailing of the summer.
The next southern bay event is the Governor's Cup at Ware …
On Saturday July 23, FBYC hosted an International Opti Hi-Performance Clinic in anticipation of the Opti Nationals, under leadership of FBYC Head Coach Juan Romero. Eighteen sailors attended the Clinic or the related Green Fleet Clinic run by Captain Ron Jenkins. Included were five visitors from Juans native club in Salinas, Ecuador. After the Clinic the Juniors engaged in a traditional Burgee exchange. Madeleine Alderman presented the FBYC Burgee and received the Salinas Burgee from Maria Mercedes Ayala. Then, Noel Clinard conducted a naming ceremony for the Wright Skiff begun by the Maritime Museum at FBYC during the Junior Olympics and completed by the museum personnel and Noel. Continuing the tradition of naming club boats after beloved club personnel …
Beat the summer heat and work on your moon tan during this Saturday night's Moonlight Race, which by the way counts in this season's long distance series. Before the race, make sure you check the special SIs for a slight course change that was requested by our deeper draft brethren to avoid rounding the shoal waters around Windmill Point Light. These instructions will be posted on the bulletin board under Fannie's house as well as on the course board aboard Mr. Roberts before the start. Beat the competition back to the dock to enjoy a late night ice cream social at the main clubhouse!
Don't forget, the third long distance series race is next weekend's …
Some food for thought from Scuttlebutt on why you should diversify your crew. But be careful, you could get more exposure than you want in the Southside Sentinel. And in terms of bringing a Junior onto Oracle two recent attempts of mine failed for a very simple reason; my invitations were intercepted by the young man's spam filter. The only time this happened to me before was when a bland joke poking fun at an '04 Presidential candidate was intercepted by an employers profanity filter. The intended recipient has since changed jobs but not because his mail was blocked. The lesson I have learned from these event is don't depend solely on e-mail.
FBYC members Marie Klok Crump and Will Crump repeated their feat from last month by winning the area ABC semi-finals in the Prince of Wales Trophy in Annapolis, MD. The POW is the US National Match Racing Championship which is raced annually as a cup system. Will and Marie were joined by Maries brother, Thomas Klok in both the qualifying victory in Hampton, VA last month as well as the semi-final victory this weekend in Annapolis.
The team raced a consistent event winning 7 out of 10 matches with plenty of close racing. Finishing second was Geoff Ewenson followed by Dan Wittig in third. Dan and team finished second in the Hampton qualifier.
