Once Hurricane Aurthur blew through it was smooth sailing for the Flying Scots and Front Runners at the first One Design Summer Sea Breeze regatta on Saturday. What was clouds with winds in the 30's just a day before gave way to mostly sunny skies and 8-10 knot winds for 4 races run by PRO Mike Dale and his race committee. Thanks to Veronica Hinckle for some pictures.
Your Junior Race Teams have not been idle since the end of Junior Week. We have a record 45 kids total-12 on the Opti Development Team, 12 on the Laser Race Team, and 21 on the Opti Race Team!
After the Commonwealth, the Opti Development Team stayed home to practice, while the Opti Race Team and Laser Race Team hit the road. First up after the Commonwealth on June 21-22 was the Rock Hall Yacht Club Annual Junior Regatta in Rock Hall, Maryland; followed by the Tred Avon Yacht …
Attention all offshore racers, cruisers, and classic boats...The Leukemia Cup is this weekend Saturday and Sunday. There is still time to sign up at the Leukemia Cup Site. If you haven't signed up yet, what are you waiting for? This is a great cause and good racing will be had by all.

The Cruising Division will cruise up the Rappahannock River on Saturday, August 2nd and will have a cookout and stay overnight at the Rappahannock River Yacht Club. We will gather Friday night, August 1st, at 6:00 PM for cocktails and a captains' meeting at Fanny's House. Beer, wine and light fare will be provided. For Saturday's dinner please bring something to grill and a dish to share (hors d'ouvres, side dish or dessert). The Dockmaster will advise me of the availability of slips early that week and I will make a best effort to fit all boats into an appropriate space. Please register on the website and email Nancy (nstoakley@verizon.net) or me (samstoakley …
As of 6:00 am the forecast is still for northwest winds at 30 mph. I truly regret that we must cancel the Long Distance race scheduled for today. The weather should improve by this afternoon so plan on attending the cookout!
We have been closely watching the track of Hurricane Arthur and will continue to do so to determine if we can safely conduct the Long Distance race scheduled for Friday. I expect to make a final decision by 8:00 am tomorrow morning and any changes to the program will be posted on the front page of the website. Thank you for your patience and please remember that even if there is not a race there will still be a great party that you will not want to miss!
In anticipation of somewhat breezy conditions possible for the Long Distance race this Friday we have changed the NOR to add an additional course #5 to the event. This course will be sailed entirely in Fishing Bay and not around Stove Point. Given the forecast of northerly winds this should give a protected venue for fun safe racing! The new course #5 is as follows:
We are just days away from the Southern Chesapeake Leukemia Cup Regatta to be based at its new venue at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park over the weekend of July 11 -12. Already The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is being flooded with registrations from racers around the Bay.
But it’s not too late to participate… registrations are being accepted through Thursday, July 10 at www.leukemiacup.org/va. And those that choose not to be on the racecourse can register for dinners by J&W Seafood and Gala festivities on Friday and Saturday nights to include musical entertainment and an auction. Fun for the entire family!

Opti Kids
Paul and Julie Ann Wash, assisted by ODT Coach Austin Powers and 40 parents and grandparents, finished the second week end of Opti Kids on June 14 & 15 with a cook out for 100 and an exciting sail to the far beach in Fishing Bay. All 34 kids looked like old pros by the end of the class, thanks to the calm and patient teaching of Paul, Julie Ann and Austin. Not a tear was shed, and all are promising to come back for more sailing at FBYC! Perhaps just as importantly, the parents and grandparents …
The Class 3 boats in the Newport Bermuda Race include both FBYC boats - Carina and Nanuq. If you visit Bermuda Race Tracking you will see that in the last day or so, Nanuq has done an end run around most of the class and is now 34 nm from Bermuda. The white (Carina), red and yellow boats behind Nanuq are 48-50 miles away from Bermuda and are moving 2 knots or less, while Nanuq is going 4.7 knots. She shows 20th in IRC overall which is the best score shown for any of the other Class 3 boats - Carina being 21st, and that purple boat to Nanuq's west is motoring having retired.
The Annual Cut Channel Race is this Saturday with the first warning at 11 AM or as the NOR states "1100 hours." Noel Clinard is the PRO and Bonnie Black is hosting a dinner at the main clubhouse following the race where awards and refreshments will also be served. If you haven't registered already, please do so. Also, if you would give Bonnie a heads up if you plan on doing dinner afterwards.
Currently, there are 3 boats in each of the A & B fleets respectively and 4 boats in each of the C & NS fleets respectively. So please encourage additional folks to register and join us. I believe there is a direct relationship between number of boats and the funometer (pronounced …
Attention offshore racers! Registration is now open for the 2014 Stingray Point Regatta.
This year, we are utilizing Yacht Scoring to coordinate registration and scoring for the event. Yacht scoring is fast becoming the standard interface for regional and invitational sailing events. Yacht Scoring's platform helps us to not only organize entries and score races, but but to publicize our event to other interested and/or potential competitors.
Three of our Opti Race Team members recently accepted invitations to participate in a USODA National Developmental Team “Boot Camp” hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club, held June 7 & 8. First some background: the U.S. Opti Class is highly organized. The U.S. has a rigorous system for selecting and training sailors it sends to events around the world to compete against other nations. First, a sailor must qualify to attend “Team Trials”, which this year were held in Connecticut in May. Several FBYC team members qualified, and of the over 200 sailors racing in that event, Boyd Bragg (13) and Benton Amthor (12) did outstanding, thereby earning an invitation to the Boot Camp. Boyd qualified as a full …
We couldn't have asked for a much nicer day on Saturday for the One Design Invitational. Four Front Runners and 3 San Juan 21s and Geoff Cahill were out racing on a day that started with light winds in a building sea breeze and mostly sunny skies.
PRO Parker Garrett and his crew of Young Adult Members set a 1/4 mile course with a windward mark just off Stove Point. The sound signals were a little unconventional but let's just say Parker has a way with horns.
The Front Runner racing was close all the way around. Boren and Squires were both sailing a Front Runner for the first time and were having a great day of going 2-2-1 …
The Junior Division swung into high-octane summertime FUN the first week of June!
Opti Kids: Paul and Julie Ann Wash hosted, and taught along with Coach Austin Powers, 34 sailors aged 5 to 8 for the first week end of Opti Kids. The weather was perfect, and with-in two hours of the start of the first class, the kids were tacking and gybing around whale and sea turtle marks right off our beach! It was impossible to say who had the most fun-the kids, their delighted and astonished parents, Austin or Paul and Julie Ann! They followed sailing with what else-ICE CREAM.
Opti and Laser Race Team: 21 Opti and Laser racers began their summer season with their first practice and …
SOUTHERN BAY RACE WEEK – They came. They raced. They partied. SBRW racers gathered in Hampton for three days of competition that tested the full range of racing skills. On Friday, a lightly rainy, semi-dreary day weather-wise, they raced in Hampton Roads Harbor; on Saturday, a bright sunny, blustery day, featuring NNE breezes in the high teens and low 20s and accompanying seas, they raced one another in a distance race off Bukroe; on Sunday they squared off in multiple windward-leeward races off Ocean View, again under sunny skies with perfect, steady, racing wind. When all was said and done, Neil Ford and Lis Biondi (J24, Rocket J) won their fleet and the coveted BLACK SEAL CUP, thus proving …
