Winter Program 2011 - Member Highlights!
January 29, 2011 from 4-7 p.m.
From family cruising in a small boat to hard-core racing in Sonars and J-24s against some of the worlds best sailors at New York Yacht Clubs harbor court facility in Newport, Rhode Island, fellow members did some pretty neat stuff in 2010. Come spend an evening with us as we celebrate some of the diverse interests represented in our great club. The Waters family will begin by talking about their 8-month cruising sabbatical to the Bahamas (and south), and after an intermission with light refreshments, the sailors and fans who represented FBYC at the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup Qualifying Series will speak. From cruisers …
As the boomer generation transitions into its golden years, one cannot deny the competitive cravings of many of our silver-haired FBYC members over age 60. Sure, there are plenty of regattas limited to classic yachts but none tailored specifically for classy seniors. Of course the Lasers have their Masters regattas, but get this... you only have to be 35 and up to qualify. Haw-dee-haw. Now FBYC is sponsoring a new regatta in 2011 for truly genuine masters with all those cocky young sea-lions excluded. Isnt it about time those young-uns got their comeuppance?!
My old friend Perry Guy (a veteran Penquin and Laser skipper) and I thought it would be fun to introduce a new racing event open only …
Lucky Dog racing will be sailing in Key West Race Week all next week. Skipper Travis Weisleder will have fellow FBYC members Lud Kimbrough, John Wake, Rob Whittemore and Jon Deutsch along. Tal Ozeri from Texas will round out the crew of 6.
Lucky Dog is a J105 and will be sailing against 14 other J105's on the Division 2 Racing Area. Races will run Monday-Friday from mid-morning until mid-afternoon.
Nanuq, the 42' Sabre from Fishing Bay Yacht Club has started the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race this week. Owner Glenn Doncaster has a few other FBYC regulars along as crew.

Some may remember an earlier account of Sophie and Mike Massie and me, racing his Rhodes 19 in Nantucket Race Week, including our mishap of misreading the novelty course with its windward mark being the notorious boat Miss China tied to a public mooring in swift current in the center of the harbor. Those amused by that story will find the following link to the latest exploits of Miss China highly entertaining: http://www.ack.net/misschina122810.html

From the early days on the Chesapeake Bay to the yacht races held all along the Bay today, the Chesapeake’s winds have played an outsized role in the region’s economy and culture.
But some scientists have concluded that those wind patterns have undergone a historic shift. And this change in average wind direction has had an impact not only on sailing, but also on water quality in the Bay. Until about 30 years ago, the prevailing winds that blew up the Bay in the summertime came mostly from the south, according to Dr. Michael Kemp, a professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science …
