FORT LAUDERDALE TO KEY WEST RACE.  A week from this Wednesday, on January 12th, three boats with southern Bay and beyond attachments will be racing from  Fort Lauderdale to Key West.  Christian Schaumloffel (HYC, Virginia Beach), will be taking his Hobie 33, Mirage, and Glenn Doncaster (FBYC, Raleigh, NC) will be racing his Sabre 426, Nanuq.  Richard Oland, with southern Bay racer Mark Wheeler in the crew, will race Vela Veloce, a Southern Cross 52, to Key West and will stay over for KWRW (see below).  All of the Lauderdale to Key West crews hope and pray for a very fast reach down the coast of Florida without, of course, any "bumps in the night".

HOWARD McCUE, JR.
4/12/1917 – 12/23/2010

Howard McCue, Jr., distinguished Richmond Cardiologist and Insurance Executive, died on December 23, 2010 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Emma Gray Emory McCue; his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Robert Osteen; his son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Judith McCue III; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Dr. McCue was predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn Moore McCue, who died in April 1999.

Dr. McCue graduated from the University of Virginia in 1937. He then entered medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. It was there that he met Carolyn, who was also studying to be a doctor at a time …

From the early days on the Chesapeake Bay to the yacht races held all along the Bay today, the Chesapeake’s winds have played an outsized role in the region’s economy and culture.

But some scientists have concluded that those wind patterns have undergone a historic shift. This is the result of an outstanding effort produced by our members representing all four sailing divisions and all of our fleets. TOP DOGS ON THE SOUTHERN BAY and now they have the bones to prove it!   On Saturday night CCV awarded bonafides and trophies to winners of the 2010 High Point, and then celebrated by dancing the night away at the new party venue on Fort Monroe.  SEA STAR (David Eberwine and guest skipper, Brian McCauley), COOL CHANGE (Rusty Burshell),  ROUNDABOUT (Alan Bomar), and BLACK WIDOW (Leo Wardrup) took first place in PHRF A, B, C, and Non-Spin respectively.   The 2010 season included 9 days of racing.  Spring and Fall Series, each 3 days,  the Moonlight Triangle, the Founders Race, and the third day of Southern Bay Race Week all figured in the High Point tally.  …

This is a sanctioned US SAILING JUDGES WORKSHOP and Test required for initial certification and re-certification as a US Sailing Judge. For those that are not currently certified Judges, some protest committee experience is recommended but not required. The end of the Offshore racing season is upon us! What better way to celebrate another glorious season of spirited competition than roasting a bunch of oysters and drinking cold beer! The club will supply the oysters and the beer and we ask everyone else bring a share dish. We will start roasting the oysters whenever Mr Roberts gets back to the dock. Bring your own gloves and oyster knives, we will have a few but we always need more! Everyone is welcome, we look forward to seeing you there.

US SAILING Judges Workshop and Test,  November 20-21 2010, Richmond, VA.  This workshop is required for initial certification and re-certification as a US Sailing Judge. Some protest committee experience is recommended, but not required. The workshop is two full days and will cover rules, handling protests and redress, procedures for running hearings, writing up protest committee decisions, handling open hearings, and arbitration. Whale sighted in the Chesapeake Bay

w2.jpg Bryan, Terri and Jonathan Flagg of Deltaville and Ashland were on their boat October 10 when they spotted this whale in the Chesapeake Bay near Windmill Point. Jonathan took photos of the whale with his Blackberry. Paul Summers of White Stone and Annapolis, Md., also was fishing in the vicinity with his father and spotted the whale. They rode along beside it for about 30 minutes. “It was a very large whale,” said Summers. “I’ve done a lot of ocean fishing and seen a lot of whales. This was probably a humpback and a mature adult.” The whale was spotted in about 20 feet of water. According to Joan Barns …

DSC_0662.jpg Every recent Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters regatta has been memorable for various reasons and this years edition has been no different. Mother Nature came through again, not with rain, nor high water, but with wind. The 29th Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship will be a regatta that the 43 Laser sailors who came to Fishing Bay Yacht Club will not soon forget.

John Bertrand from Annapolis Yacht Club was our overall champion and Masters division winner with just 21 points. Peter Seidenberg (Sail Newport) overcame a few point deficit on Saturday to edge ahead of James Jacob (Fishing Bay Yacht Club) to take 2nd overall and 1st Great Grand Master. James finished 3rd overall and 2nd Master.
